The Jesus And Mary Chain - Darklands download album

Darklands is the second studio album by Scottish alternative rock band The Jesus and Mary Chain. It was released on 31 August 1987 by Blanco y Negro Records. Unlike their previous album, Psychocandy, drum machines were used in place of drummer Bobby Gillespie, who had left to pursue a career as the frontman with Primal Scream. Lead vocals are performed by Jim Reid, with the exception of "Darklands", "Nine Million Rainy Days" and "On the Wall", which are sung by William Reid.

Darklands is the second album by Scottish noise pop band The Jesus and Mary Chain. After the release of Psychocandy, the band had become famous for their highly abrasive, over-distorted wall of feedback sound. So, in response, the band toned it down for Darklands, an album that’s been described as the calm after storm. The album was jointly produced by Bill Price (who’s produced Harry Nilsson, The Clash & Sex Pistols) and John Loder (Big Black, Ministry & Fugazi).

Songs were often longer while the album itself was shorter than Psychocandy, walls of sound were often stripped away in favor of calmer classic rock twang and groove, while William Reid took the lead vocal at points, showing he had a slightly sweeter, wistful tone in comparison to his brother

Darklands is an album by the Jesus and Mary Chain that is listenable, and in 1987 that’s about the biggest compromise the band could ever make. It’s a compromise that shifted the band into varying states of apathetic alt-rock for the rest of their career, leaving Psychocandy as a feedback-laden outlier in their discography. It also left the latter unjustly labelled as the band’s only majorly influential contribution to musical history, when Darklands is almost as prophetic of the UK’s pop resurgence in the mid ‘90s - a la Teenage Fanclub - as Psychocandy was to the rise of shoegaze.

Notes

This deluxe expanded edition features all the non-album b-sides, the pre-Darklands Some Candy Talking EP, outtakes, the complete BBC Radio Sessions the band recorded in this period, previously unreleased material includes a much sought-after Janice Long session from 1986, an alternate version of the "Some Candy Talking" single recorded for the NME, a recently unearthed version of the track "Darklands" with strings, and a BBC audio interview with Jim and William Reid from 1987.

The DVD features the promo videos for all the singles, a first time on DVD for the band-made film for b-side "Kill Surf City", and previously unreleased archival TV appearances, including their only appearance on Top Of The Pops, alongside performances on Belgian TV and ITV's short-lived TOTP rival The Roxy.

The 32 page booklet contains exclusive new interviews that tell the band's story in their own words including a contribution from ex-member and Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, alongside lyrics, rare memorabilia and previously unpublished photos.

Initial pressings of disc one had a mastering glitch - the track markings were slightly out of place on tracks 8 - 16 so that the beginning of each track starts at the end of the one before. The disc still plays through fine, but you may notice this issue when playing individual tracks from that selection. Demon Music Group issued replacement cds on request.

Comes in quad-fold double Digipak. "In The Rain" is a version of "About You".
