Complete your Neo Boys collection. One of the best bands associated with the early 1980s Portland, OR scene was the Neo Boys. They released very few recordings in their five years of activity – a 7" EP (three songs), a 12" EP (seven songs), and a few scattered compilation tracks – all long out of print, hard to find, and treasured by those who have them. Sooner or Later brings together all of those and more, digging deep into the archives to paint a far more complete picture of the band's accomplishments.

This comprehensive collection gathers vital live and studio recordings from the pioneering all-female Portland punk band Neo Boys, who formed in part as a response to their city's overwhelmingly male music scene

Album · 2013 · 45 Songs. All-female bands were exceedingly rare at the time, and The Neo Boys were the first in Portland, Ore. Even with an early 1980 7 EP released by The Wipers’ Greg Sage, they seemed to fly under the radar of most punk fans, both then and now. This massive new collection was curated with the steadfast guidance of K Records’ Calvin Johnson. It features live sessions, demos, and studio recordings (including that long-out-of-print 1980 EP and the self-released 1982 Crumbling Myths EP). Here's hoping this puts The Neo Boys on the punk history map with a big star.

Arranged chronologically, this compilation follows the Neo Boys from their beginnings as scrappy, enthusiastic neophytes to their more mature later phase.Disc One covers the years 1978-80 in all their ragged, three-chord punky glory, emulating heroes like Patti Smith and X-Ray Spex: four early live recordings; five songs that might be rehearsal tracks or studio outtakes from the 7" sessions produced by Greg Sage; the three songs that appeared on the latter 7"; and nine songs that sound like studio recordings, including the two that appeared on the Live 10-29-79 compilation (the live versions of which are surprisingly MIA here).Disc Two covers 1980-83, when they were joined by guitarist Meg Hentges, one of the most distinctive and unsung rock guitarists ever (imagine Philip Moxham of Young Marble Giants with more of a surf music sound). She brought a degree of musical sophistication to the group that nudged them to a new level of artistry. Here we get all of the songs from the Crumbling Myths 12" EP + eight more unreleased songs from what I assume to be those sessions, including Under Control from one of the early Sub Pop cassette zines; six live songs that suffer a bit from distorted vocals, four of them previously unreleased; and what I assume to be two demos, the unreleased Falling and a version of Time Keeps Time with totally different lyrics called Living for a Change. It took twenty years to pull all of this material together, and it's great to have it all in one package. My only complaint is the lack of information about the recordings. There is no indication of when or where these tracks were recorded or previously released. Given the historical value of this project and the amount of work involved, it seems a shame to leave out those details.
