Native Trees for Mississippi Landscapes. The use of indigenous trees in homes, gardens, and communities is not new to Mississippi. Indigenous trees form the very fabric of our surroundings and create our state’s own unique regional identity. Even noted Mississippi authors Eudora Welty and William Faulkner recognized the importance of Mississippi’s native flora and landscapes to help create a sense of place in their writings. The following list describes 40 tree species native to Mississippi, all of which have performed well in a variety of urban landscapes. These plants were chosen for their durability, ornamental qualities, wildlife value, and tolerance to a wide spectrum of soil, moisture, and sun exposure. Showy white flower clusters appear in February, followed by red fruits in April. Mayhaw often forms dense, thorny thickets, making it an ideal barrier or hedge. The Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA) established the program in 1996. Plant selections are evaluated by a committee and introduced to wholesale growers and Nursery Certified Professionals through MNLA's educational programs that promote their proper use in local landscapes. Each spring, it will flower with blossoms that look exactly like the white pom-poms of a bigleaf hydrangea (which flowers in late summer and fall). This is a gorgeous shrub, growing 12-15 feet tall and about as wide.

The magnolia flower can be seen on the Mississippi state quarter. No doubt about it, Mississippians have long admired the creamy white blossom and the evergreen tree upon which it grows. The choice of the Magnolia as the Mississippi state flower is a natural one. At least that’s what the school children of the state likely thought back in 1900 when they chose it over several other native flowers. However slow to act, the state’s legislature didn’t name the Magnolia the state flower of Mississippi until 1952.

Mississippi State Flower. Did you know? Most Magnolias are valued for their showy, fragrant flowers, large glossy leaves and striking fruit. Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) was officially designated as the Mississippi State Flower in 1952. Magnolias trees have large fragrant white flowers and evergreen leaves that make them one of the most splendid of forest trees and a very popular ornamental plant. Magnolia is seen in the Coastal Plains of Southeastern United States.
