Franklyn Ajaye (born May 13, 1949) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. His nickname is "The Jazz Comedian" as he also played jazz for a time earlier in his entertainment career. His name is sometimes alternatively spelled Franklin Ajaye. He has released five comedy albums to date: Franklyn Ajaye, Comedian (1973), I'm a Comedian, Seriously (1974), Don't Smoke Dope, Fry Your Hair (1977), Plaid Pants and Psychopaths (1986), and Vagabond Jazz & the Abstract Truth (2004). Ajaye made his network debut on The Flip Wilson Show in 1973 and made his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson a year later. In 1977, he appeared in episode 5, during season 3 of Saturday Night Live. On an episode of Thank God You're Here, Tony Martin showed Ajaye a copy of his comedy album Plaid Pants And Psychopaths which has his first name misspelled.
It's by a comic called Franklyn Ajaye, and it's called I'm A Comedian, Seriously. And I can honestly say that this album has been a constant source of inspiration to me and a great comfort in times of stress. If you're near the front, you can see it's still in its cellophane wrapper. I've never opened it or listened to it. I've never listened to it and I have no intention of ever doing so. But it is a great source of comfort and inspiration to me nonetheless. There's two things that I like about this album. First of all, I like the cover. The comedian and theorist Franklyn Ajaye said comedy equals time plus girls with big breasts. Thus it would appear to follow that TR, tragedy, is equal to GWBB, girls with big breasts, and that either could be substituted for the other in any given situation. But is this really the case?
His nickname is "The Jazz Comedian" for his distinctive jazz inflected style of delivery, great timing, and astute use of silence. His name is sometimes wrongly spelled Franklin Ajaye. The last two were recorded in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia
