Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites, Holberg Suite, Sibelius: Finlandia, Valse Triste. The Best of Grieg including the Piano Concerto in A minor Audio CD. Various Artists. The Grieg Piano Concerto, while an excellent performance, faces stiffer competition on record; but coupled with great Peer Gynt Suites, made this whole recording an easy addition to other great Grieg concerto performances. The combination of Sir Colin Davis and Kovacevich (originally released on Philips with the Schumann Piano Concerto) have been described as more civilized than, say, Richter or Fleischer, and certainly Davis eased into a staid conductor as he aged, but I do find this performance thrilling and well-timed.

By describing Peer Gynt’s adventures in America, I am situating the Ellington/Strayhorn Peer Gynt Suites in its cultural context to expand listeners’ comprehension of and appreciation for the music. Unlike Harrison and Van de Leur, I consider the Peer Gynt Suites one of the most innovative examples of program music in the Ellington/Strayhorn repertoire. What previous scholars and critics have described as an inadvertently lethargic and out-of-tune performance, I interpret as a conscious choice by Ellington and Strayhorn to incorporate extra-musical content into their composition.
This album of the two suites from Georges Bizet 's opera Carmen, combined with the two suites from Edvard Grieg 's incidental music for the Ibsen play, Peer Gynt, presents classics that many listeners will recognize instantly, and the release in the Royal Philharmonic 's Masterworks cost-cutter line makes the package a practical item for beginners
Grieg's Peer Gynt suite is a selection of charming tunes from the composer's incidental music to a famous play. Originally Grieg wrote a collection of 33 pieces as incidental music to renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen's new drama Peer Gynt. The play is full of high drama, adventure, tragedy, and comedy all mashed into one. Grieg's characteristically clean music perfectly fits the strong Norwegian feel and ideas of the play, and breathes life into the moods and episodes. Peer Gynt is the hero

Peer Gynt, Op. 23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo). Later, in 1888 and 1891, Grieg extracted eight movements to make two four-movement suites: Suite No. 46, and Suite No. 2, Op. 55. Some of these movements have received coverage in popular culture; see Grieg's music in popular culture.
