On Too Long In Exile Van Morrison sings with the joy of a kid with a brand new penny, and in the same breath he’s lounging in the sun, content to be right where his career has taken him. On this outing he is not only presenting something special and new for us, but he finally seems relaxed enough to try and please himself as well. As a Van Morrison fan, there is no way you can sidestep this album. As a blues fan, this album must be reckoned with on a number of levels. And oddly enough, for some reason, the artwork alone captures and bespeaks the importance of the tracks held within. this is a historical body of work, one that will forever be challenging Van Morrison in the future. On Too Long In Exile Van Morrison sings with the joy of a kid with a brand new penny, and in the same breath he’s lounging in the sun, content to be right where his career has taken him. Not only is this album musically superb, the production is equally as good, leaving next to nothing to be improved upon. Van seems to be shaking the notes for this music right out of his fingers tips, how he managed to find a place to end any of the numbers is remarkable, as every song could easily go on for hours, or even blend right into the next.

Too Long in Exile is the twenty-second studio album by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison. The album was produced by Morrison and draws on urban blues and soul jazz sounds, including collaborations with John Lee Hooker and Georgie Fame.

On “Too Long In Exile” Van Morrison sings with the joy of a kid with a brand new penny, and in the same breath he’s lounging in the sun, content to be right where his career has taken him. On this outing he is not only presenting something special and new for us, but he finally seems relaxed enough to try and please himself as well. And what we’re given here is truly some of the finest music Van Morrison has ever put out. He must have been right on the money, because that lucky penny of his caused this to be one of his most commercially successful albums of all time. This is a Blues album first and last, there is no middle ground ... though he has bent the structure, in his way, to updated not only his early works, but those of Sonny Boy Williams, Doc Pomus, Brook Benton and a host of others. One need only hear the ‘Round Robin’ version of the classic Them song “Gloria” with Howlin’ Wolf, to have you shaking your head in disbelieve for what you’re hearing. No one expected this rendition, not even Van, as he puts it, “It just sort of came about.” Well, however it came about, I certainly want more, and never tire of hearing that song alone.Van has assembled a cast of musicians to rival anything anyone has ever brought together. It takes a special talent to command such dedication, as the great and near great seemed to be flocking to him, to get his take on the sounds they dug the most ... and on this release he disappoints no one with some classic time tested songs mixed in with several new numbers, in the blues tradition, regarding his attitude toward the music industry. As a Van Morrison fan, there is no way you can sidestep this album. As a blues fan, this album must be reckoned with on a number of levels. And oddly enough, for some reason, the artwork alone captures and bespeaks the importance of the tracks held within ... this is a historical body of work, one that will forever be challenging Van Morrison in the future.Review by Jenell Kesler
