Dream Theory in Malaya: Fourth World Volume Two is an album by Jon Hassell, released in 1981. It is the sequel to his collaboration with Brian Eno, Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics, which was released the previous year. The recording draws influence from the culture of the Senoi people of Malaya
Complete your Jon Hassell collection. Pretty experimental album for the time. Glitch styling with plenty of loops on top of each other is very Mille Plateux.

The trumpeter and composer Jon Hassell may have titled his fourth album, Dream Theory in Malaya, after Stewart’s paper. But in the notes that accompany this reissue, he finds himself taken less by Stewart and more by the cinematic sound of the word ‘Malay’ and a little romance with an exotically-tuned woman from Kuala Lumpur.
Overwhelmingly interesting and extremely variant, Jon Hassell's Dream Theory in Malaya is rescued from the stereotypical new age recipe, thanks to its ever-changing instrumental structure and the use of numerous eccentric instruments that emerge as the album progresses. The album's concept is taken from an anthropologist's 1935 study of a tribe of Malaysian aborigines who made it part of their daily routine to discuss the dreams they had the night before.
This album Dream Theory In Malaya (I keep wanting to type Dream Theater In Malaya, but that's another story), is the second, and lesser album in the Fourth World series. Like Possible Musics, this one has Jon Hassell playing his eerie electronically treated trumpet over tape loops and percussive rhythms. Unfortunately, this album does not have as much Eno, and has no Percy Jones. So while this album is still very good, it is missing some of the interesting qualities of the previous album. Still, this is a good album
Eno moved on quickly to work with David Byrne on My Life In The Bush of Ghosts, with its extensive use of West African music and samples. The title of Dream Theory In Malaya gives the history away, referencing colonial-era Malaya, rather than post-independence Malaysia.
