Björk - The Music From Drawing Restraint 9 download album

The Music from Matthew Barney's Drawing Restraint 9 is a soundtrack created by Björk in collaboration with her then-partner Matthew Barney for his film of the same title. For this project Björk traveled to Japan to study ancient Japanese music. Several tracks are made with the sound of the shō, a Japanese instrument which contains 16 various reeds; the shō performances are from Mayumi Miyata, one of the world's greatest shō players. She also appears in the film, playing her instrument.

Complete your Björk collection. Traditional Japanese sounds meld with a wane and wax of minimalism and maximalism, making each scene more fantastic than the one prior to it. While this CD doesn't sound like the experimental, alternative pop that we typically hear from Björk, that fact doesn't take away from its power or effectiveness, though those who haven't actually seen Drawing Restraint 9 are at a severe disadvantage.

A soundtrack for "Drawing Restraint 9", a film by Matthew Barney. Recorded at: Woods Road Studio, New York Looking Glass, New York Greenhouse Studios, Reykjavik Bi-Coastal Music, New York Olympic Studios, London Victor Aoyama Studio, Tokyo.

This coincides quite nicely with the work Björk has produced lately, namely her album Medúlla, which was composed entirely of human voices-singing, coughing, grunting, and beatboxing. The intersection of these two artistic geniuses comes at precisely the right time, when Björk has cast off the last vestiges of her dance-floor self. To understand how remarkable a transformation this is, one might try to imagine what it would have been like if Donna Summers had turned into Yoko Ono. There are instances of Björk's vocal soundscapes on this album, in the unsettling "Pearl" and the.

It is her least succesful album to date if you view it as a pop record, which it isn't. The Music from Drawing Restraint 9 is a piece of contemporary classical composition matching with its source material, Matthew Barney's beautifully shot exploration of Japanese maritime culture. Both Barney and Björk, partners in art as well as in life, have never eschewed the expressionist, the sexual and both also are prone to pop culture (although Björk is defininately more accepted in pop culture than Barney is).

A return to instrumentation after her last, vocals-only album, Medulla, Drawing Restraint 9 nonetheless glistens with strange textures - throat singing, Noh vocal performance and sho, a Japanese instrument with 17 reeds and 15 pipes (the film is set on a Japanese whaling vessel). The most conventional piece is opening track Gratitude, in which Will Oldham sings the text of a letter to General MacArthur in thanks for the lifting of the US moratorium on whaling over shimmers of harp and celeste

Though Björk has written music for films before, her collaboration with Matthew Barney on Drawing Restraint 9 is a much deeper and more natural pairing, which makes sense, considering that they're partners in life (and now in art).
