The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death was the second and last studio album by The Housemartins. It was released in 1987, and produced three singles - "Five Get Over Excited", "Me and the Farmer" and "Build". The title song is about the British Royal Family, which found them gaining controversy in the tabloid papers similar to that of other bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. All tracks written by Heaton/Cullimore. The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death" – 3:33.
There's some filler here - "We're Not Going Back" and "You Better Be Doubtful" simply go through the motions, and the instrumental "Pirate Aggro" seems at best an afterthought - but the peaks of The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death are glorious
But they shook it all off With a nervous laugh and cough 'Next time,' she said, 'I'll let those people choke'. x2 The people who grinned themselves to death Smiled so much, they failed to take a breath And even when their kids were starving They all thought the queen was charming. She polished all upon the wall And ran her hands right through her hair So if the lady took the time to call All the houses on the street would not compare

This album got heavy airplay when I was a college radio dj back in the day & once again a few years ago when I got a car with a cassette player The guy who compared this musically to Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys is on crack. About all they have in common is that they're from Britain and they recorded in the 1980s.
