DJ Andy Smith - The Document II download album
The Document 2 by DJ Andy Smith. This came out in 2003 on Illicit Records in the UK on Mixed CD and unmixed triple vinyl (some of the initial run of vinyl had the tracklisting 'one track out' on the labels). There was a promo 7" 45 of the Patti Drew & Georgie Fame tracks. It took a whole 5 years to get a label to release part 2 of this series but as I was at the time releasing tracks under the name of Dynamo Productions (with Scott Hendy AKA Boca 45) for the Illicit label it seemed like the ideal time. For months the label were wondering why on earth I wanted to use a Kate.
The second volume in the mix series from DJ Andy Smith proves that his Portishead connection may have gotten him a deal, but it's his skills - and his ear - that have kept him working for five years. The Document II isn't quite a hip-hop mix, though a lot of it is hip-hop (half underground, half Golden Age). It's also not a Coldcut -style mash-up of the bold and the bizarre, though he does remix whitebread crooner Jack Jones and follows up Def Jux storyteller Mr. Lif with a gritty rocker from Three Dog Night.
Portishead fashioned their sound by rolling torch songs and jazz ballads into fragile gutter-soaked blunts. But whereas on 1998's The Document swinging from Marvin Gaye to Tom Jones just felt manipulative and contemptible to everyone involved, the new album sounds like someone who quite honestly thinks Mr. Lif could segue into Three Dog Night, a band so antithetical to hip-hop their last "rap battle" was with Neil Diamond.
Document II does have its eye on the rear-view mirror more than those extended DJ workouts, but some of the better recent tracks are the ones closer to home. Smith and decks-chum Scott Hendy (AKA Boca 45) occasionally moonlight as Dynamo Productions, and it’s the Booker T p of their own Showtime, slipping into the afro-beat, spacey fug of Cut Chemist‘s The Re-Return of the Original Art Form, that provides this mix’s defining moments. Smith is no turntablist in the sense of a Mixmaster Mike, or DJ Shadow. There’s no recognisable narrative that unites the disparate elements of Shadow and Cut Chemist’s Brainfreeze projects, where the DJs created a tense, stuttering mix out of upbeat, confident Northern Soul tracks. It also lacks the kind of duck-to water DJ skills than you’ll find on any of DJ ScizzaHandz‘s R ‘n’ B cut-ups on New York’s legendary AV8 label.
Superb second selection of eclectic nk/rock/etc from DJ Andy Smith of Portishead fame, highly recommended. For those that don't know, peep the Kate Bush intro :) More here soundcloud. 1. Kate Bush - The Man With The Child In His Eyes 2. Craig G - Welcome To The Game (Inst 10. Martin Brew - S. .
