This, Curved Air's first album, achieved instant success due in no small part to the clever marketing of the initial copies. Although it has been done many times since, I believe this was the first commercially produced picture disc. Initial copies came in a clear plastic sleeve, with only the actual LP (complete with images of full frontally naked women), inside. Air Conditioning is their debut album released in 1970 and there's no doubting the talent in the band. The music is tastefully played with particularly good use of electric violin by Darryl Way and the rest of the band play their parts well. Their trump card is the melancholy tones of vocalist Sonya Kristina.

In its initial vinyl form, Curved Air's debut album is one of the prog rock movement's most prized artifacts - not for the music (for that, it goes without saying, is flawless), but for the picture-disc format which had never previously graced a 12" rock record. A glimmering of that sought-after magnificence lives on, of course, in the artwork which has graced every subsequent release, this Collectors' Choice reissue included.

Air Conditioning is the first studio album by British progressive rock band Curved Air. It was released in November 197 and reached number 8 in the UK albums chart in December, 1970. On the picture disc (subsequently used as the album cover) the album title was shown as "Airconditioning", while the subsequent green label issue had it as "Air Conditioning". 1 Background and recording. He explained the inspiration for the song's music: "I was a great fan of Terry Riley (having played in the 1st London performance of "In C" in 1968) and was very impressed by "A Rainbow in Curved Air". Then I had a kind of "musical vision" of a high-energy rock sound going into a Terry-like tape-loop improvisation.

Air Conditioning, their first LP released in the fall of 1970 was preceded by great word of mouth due to Curved Air’s reputation as a great live act and managed to reach number 8 in the UK charts. This effort is a fully collaborative affair with all the members contributing material. Opener It Happened Today manages to marry a distinctive song which features some quality solo’s by Francis Monkman with a classically influenced coda. The general consensus on Curved Air is that they peaked with Air Conditionning but Air Cut is a truly excellent album that deserves to be rediscovered. The creative axis of bass guitarist Mike Wedgwood and Sonja Kristina managed to entice musical prodigy Eddie Jobson who replaced Darryl Way on violin and keyboard duties. Auditions were held to recruit a new guitarist and a drummer which resulted in the recruitment of Kirby Gregory and Jim Russell.

It is now 48 years since the formation of Curved Air, their debut album, Air Conditioning, being originally released on the Warner Brothers label in November 1970. This year Esoteric Recordings have put together a great 2-CD reissue
