Mark has held multiple leadership positions across the company, including nine years as an Executive Director of WPP plc. For 12 years, as Head of Strategy and then CEO of WPP Digital, he was responsible for the company’s digital development, including the move into technology through the acquisition of 24/7 Real Media, the creation of digital network POSSIBLE and the launch of Stream, WPP’s celebrated unconference. In 2015, he was appointed Global CEO of Wunderman, where he transformed the network into one of the world’s leading customer-focused digital agencies.

He told financial analysts at Sea Containers, WPP’s new headquarters overlooking the Thames, that he wants to turn the advertising agency holding group into a "creative transformation company" for clients. The truth is that it is WPP that badly needs creative transformation, as Read all but admitted after two years of declining net sales in 2017 and 2018 at a time when the wider ad market has been growing steadily. Read’s view is that WPP doesn’t have a cost problem, even though he is cutting 3,500 jobs or about 3% of the 130,000-strong workforce. It’s a revenue growth problem, he says. Technology will be at the heart of WPP’s transformation," one slide declared. So much so that Read’s vision for WPP sounded at times like he wants it to be more like a technology consultant than creative agency partner, although he stressed he will "put creativity back at the heart of WPP".

He believes that big brands will invest more in advertising to protect their positions in disrupted markets. Some analysts agree with this rosy view. Agency executives further argue that digital consultancies will not be a threat to their core advertising business because they mostly compete for different, lower-cost services. In private, however, a senior executive at a rival ad-holding firm rejects much of this optimism. Technological disruption and disintermediation, he says, will only deepen.

WPP has made‎ few big strategic decisions since Mr Quarta became executive chairman in April, although it has sold minority stakes in a number of businesses.

In 1985, he formed WPP after taking control of a shell company, Wire & Plastic Products, and established it as a marketing services group in 1986. As CEO of the company for the past three decades he has built up an advertising empire with 3,000 offices in 112 countries. The razor sharp businessman was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours. The scuffle has put a spotlight on Mr. Sorrell’s ambitions after WPP, which he founded in the 1980s, and his efforts to push past his unceremonious exit. Bidding on the same thing as WPP, is that a coincidence - of all the things in the world? said Jon Bond, co-chairman of the digital marketing firm Shipyard, who has co-founded and led several agencies and met with Mr. Sorrell over the years. It feels like more of an emotional reaction than a thought-out calculated approach because he’s on the rebound.

He moves WPP’s tax domicile to Ireland in protest at the prospect of double taxation of overseas profits - once abroad and once again in the UK. It moves back to the UK five years later after the government enacted legislation covering the taxation of foreign profits. Roberto Quarta, the WPP chairman, has taken the role of executive chairman until a replacement for Sorrell can be found. Quarta has said there is an exceptional team of potential candidates from WPP’s top management, as well as a constantly refined list of external candidates. However, investors and analysts believe that, given the scale of WPP, Sorrell’s successor must be an external candidate.

WPP stock dropped steeply Thursday after the world's largest advertising holding company posted worse-than-expected results for the third quarter, citing weakness in its creative agencies and in its North American business. The holding company has also suffered a recent string of client business losses. Though it has been a point of discussion for months, WPP has also said it is formally looking to sell a stake in Kantar. Prior to joining Ad Age in 2017, she covered technology and startups for the Chicago Tribune’s Blue Sky Innovation section. Earlier in her career, she covered business and breaking news at the Chicago Sun-Times.

WPP has become too unwieldy with too much duplication, the company adds. It also says its remaining businesses will be more integrated and collaborative, and that WPP will look to cater better for clients. This has been reinforced as the company has begun developing global campuses, with one opening in Prague, Czech Republic earlier this year. On these campuses, WPP agencies, design consultancies and businesses are based across a few buildings in the same location, with the aim of encouraging collaborative working and improving the experience and creative offering for clients. The main marque is created by the grid, which changes and reflects light when animated, he says. The colour transforms through each individual dot, which could represent the people who make up WPP, the different teams, and the way we work together.
