Unfortunately, The Shadow Theory leaves one with the impression that Kamelot don’t want to push themselves any further. It is, by all counts and measures, a by-the-books Kamelot album with only the vaguest hints at something greater. Catchy, chorus-driven songs" Check. Power ballads with at least one featuring a guest female vocalist" Check. One or two lengthier, more ambitious tracks to break the monotony" Check. The problem with all of these routines isn’t that they’re adhered to, but that the band have either done little or nothing to innovate upon them.

As Kamelot enter 2018, the band’s core lineup of founding Guitarist Thomas Youngblood along with Vocalist Tommy Karevik, Bassist Sean Tibbetts, and Keyboardist Oliver Palotai strike back with their twelfth overall studio album, The Shadow Theory, due out on April 6, 2018.

The Shadow Theory is the twelfth studio album by the American power metal band Kamelot. The album is produced by Sascha Paeth and was released on April 6, 2018. Guests on the album include Lauren Hart (Once Human) and Jennifer Haben (Beyond the Black). It is the only studio album to feature Johan Nunez, replacing longtime member Casey Grillo on drums, who had departed from the band on February 5, 2018, to pursue other musical and touring opportunities and to focus on his drumhead company.
