Windham Hill Sampler '92" (12 tracks; 50 mi. starts off great with Michael Manring's 6 min. "Wide Asleep", an immediately familiar track if you are familiar with Manring. The first half of the album is truly stacked with great tracks one after another, including AlexDe Grassi's "Charlotte", Michael Hedges' "Chava's Song" and Mark Isham's "Thumbelina", just to name those

Windham Hill Artists. Guitar Sampler II. CD and Cassette. I discovered the Windham Hill Sampler ’81 in a large stack of promo records (mostly pop) and the album cover drew me in. I managed the audio department at the back of the store, next to the glassed-in classical room. Once I started to play the WHS ’81 in the back of the store, nearly everyone that ventured back to the classical and jazz sections wanted to know what it was.
Windham Hill Records and A&M Records reached a distribution agreement in 1982. Windham Hill would remain with A&M until A&M was bought by PolyGram in 1989. Ironically, the Windham Hill sampler series by various artists were regulars on the Billboard Pop Album chart. The samplers were made from demo tapes sent to Windham Hill. They started out as in-store and radio promotional pieces but became standard releases. In 1985, they were in the Top 100 and Top 200; in 1986, two samplers were in the Top 200, and again in 1988 two samplers were in the Top 200. While Windham Hill was not often on the Billboard Pop chart, it dominated the Billboard New Age chart and its successor, the Contemporary Jazz chart throughout the 1980s.

In the late 1980s the Windham Hill label was at its commercial peak and "Windham Hill Sampler '88" (11 tracks; 46 mi. is a straight reissue of the vinyl album. Schonherz and Scott kick things off with the gentle "Wishing Well", which is followed by a piano-solo piece from . album), Belgian minimalist Wim Mertens' "Close Cover" (from his first US release after many more previous releases in Europe), and of course Will Ackerman's "Climbing in Geometry" (from "Conferring With the Moon", his finest album in my opinion). No doubt about it, this is a fantastic collection and if you have a chance to find the other sampler discs from this decade, do yourself a favor and get them while you can.
