His Symphony 5, Di Tre Re, (1950) is a thoroughly modern update to the French symphony. His music is post-romantic with occasional elements of post-modernism thrown in. He wasn't afraid of the occasional modal clash. This recording with Neeme Jarvi and the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of the single best Honegger discs I've heard. 5 - Di tre re" receives an exciting performance and probably one of the best I've heard. In capsule: with Neeme Järvi being such a profuse conductor and apparently ready to tackle almost any repertoire, from Berwald and Fibich to Amy Beach, George Chadwick, Barber, Ives and Tubin, you'd half-expect him to be entirely at home with none, especially when it strays from the Romantic, preferably Russian and Baltic.
The Symphony No. 5 by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger is a three-movement work for orchestra written in the autumn of 1950. Its subtitle Di tre re is a reference to the D (re) played by the solo timpani and basses at the end of each movement. It was commissioned by the Natalie Koussevitzky Foundation and first performed on March 9, 1951, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Charles Munch.
