As strong as Hey Love is - it's one of Rotary Connection's best records - three of its songs are so rich with full-bloom beauty that you can't help but refer to the group's lack of an adequate single-disc best-of as an extremely unfortunate thing. Minnie Riperton's Her Chess Years, which is dominated by Rotary Connection material, doesn't qualify for its bonkers lack of a couple key songs. Virtually anything would seem like a comedown after it, but the title track of the album sounds at points like a precursor to fellow Chicagoan Terry Callier's "Gotta Get Closer to You" and keeps the quality of the orchestra-spiked soul flowing. The rest of the album ranges from fair to good, with a slight edge to the good.
The Rotary Connection’s final album, Hey, Love is, in my opinion, their very best. The light Brazilian If I Sing My Song will put a smile on the face of the most critical listener. Our heart strings are gently pulled by The Sea & She and we remember sweetly. The jazzy-funky I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun takes us back to a time of self realization and acknowledgment of human spirit. We are then intellectually reminded of the paradox and complexity of Hangin Round The Bee Tree
Released in 1971 on the album ‘Hey Love'under the band name 'The New Rotary Connection’ (a reference to their change in sound), I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun is a smooth soul jazz track with heavy psychedelic elements, supplemented with the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Minnie Riperton. The track is known for its soaring composition and complex arrangements that form together to capture and elaborate some of the best features of the psychedelic sound of that era.
Rotary Connection was an American psychedelic soul band, formed in Chicago in 1966. In addition to their own recordings, Rotary Connection is notable as the backing band for Muddy Waters on his psychedelic blues album Electric Mud. The band's members included Minnie Riperton, who would emerge as a notable solo artist. The highly experimental band was the idea of Marshall Chess, son of Chess Records founder Leonard Chess
