Beethoven: Violin Concerto; Romance in F. 1992. Richly distinguished and ripely magisterial, Oscar Shumsky's 1988 recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Romance in F with Andrew Davis leading London's Philharmonia would be much more enjoyable if Shumsky played in tune more often. One cannot fault his interpretation. Shumsky is nobility incarnate, but the humanity of his lyricism tempers the dignity of his expressivity. Nor can one really fault his technique.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.
