Fritz Reiner was one of the great Wagner conductors, bar none. He did not make complete commercial recordings of all the Overtures, Preludes and "bleeding chunks," but there are enough to document his sheer mastery of Wagner. There are also full-length "live" versions of FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER, TRISTAN, MEISTERSINGER, most of ACT II of DIE WALKURE, and scenes from PARSIFAL. RIENZI Overture, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, live, March 27, 1958. This might be the greatest recording of the RIENZI Overture in history. Runner-up: Szell, NY, January 2, 1954, Columbia. I only wish that there had been an additional Reiner/Chicago Wagner album or two, as had been done by George Szell in Cleveland. The sound is not the best by the Mohr/Layton team; it seems as if there was tape overloading in the fortissimo passages.
