Besides João Gilberto's definitive renditions of Brazilian classics, he also put his mark on and made world classics such as "'S Wonderful," "Estate" and "Bésame Mucho" his own. With outstanding arrangements and musical direction by Claus Ogerman, Amoroso is a reference recording for years to come. João is playful in "Tin Tin por Tin Tin," passionate in "Bésame Mucho," heartbroken in "Caminhos Cruzados," towering in "Wave" and always perfect in every song he sings. The album closes with Jobim/Buarque's "Zíngaro," known to many as "Retrato em Branco e Preto. dB -1. 0 dB 4:42 05-Wave DR11 -. 2 dB -1. 6 dB 6:15 06-Caminhos Cruzados DR12 -. 8 dB 4:20 07-Triste DR12 -. 1 dB -1. 4 dB 6:23 08-Zingaro –. João Gilberto is a bossa nova album by João Gilberto, originally released in Brazil as a vinyl LP in 1973 and reissued on CD in 1988. João Gilberto released another album named João Gilberto in 1961, as well as several EPs with only his name as title. The minimal instrumentation – just Gilberto's guitar and voice, plus Sonny Carr's very sparse percussion – and the relentless beat give the album a hypnotic feel. The album's sound engineer was famous electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos

João Gilberto was born in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. From an early age, music was a part of Gilberto's life. His grandfather bought him his first guitar at the age of 14. During high school, Gilberto teamed up with some of his classmates to form a small band. Gilberto, who led the band, was influenced by Brazilian popular songs, American jazz, and even some opera, among other genres. After trying his luck as a radio singer in Salvador, Bahia, the young Gilberto was recruited in 1950 as lead singer of the vocal quintet Garotos da Lua (Moon Boys) and moved to Rio de Janeiro.
