As with some other Autechre releases on Warp, this album was assigned a catalogue number that was significantly ahead of the normal sequence (. WARPCD127 and WARPCD129 weren't released until February and March 2005 respectively). Some copies came with miniature postcards with a sheet a stickers on the front that say 'autechre' in the Confield font.

Despite the dozens of experimental electronics producers constantly nipping at their heels, Autechre remained at the forefront of academic sound processing with a highly awaited sixth full album. Whether pushing the next new thing in 2001 is enough to keep listeners coming back to this LP years later is a much different question, and the assault of non-rhythmic beats sprayed all over Confield is enough to keep most from even trying.
Confield is the sixth album by British electronic music duo Autechre, released 30 April 2001 by Warp Records
Confield picks up where its predecessor, the four-track Peel Session 2 EP, left off- splicing the ambient, non-musical styles of artists like Kit Clayton and Phthalocyanine into Autechre's more structured syntheses. Booth and Brown exercise a meticulous economy of melody on this disc, so much so that many of the tracks cease to resemble proper songs. Think EP7 without the hooks
Autechre’s sixth full-length album divides enthusiasts like no other, abstract to the point where even devout fans have condemned it as a step too far. Any conversation pertaining to Autechre’s output is usually rich in superlatives and enigmatic, metaphorical interpretations, while the merits and qualities of each release are frequently contested by virtue of their cryptic nature. In the wake of EP7 – which in itself was a significant departure from normality, even by Autechre’s standards – Confield obliterated the line between method and madness, and any sense of compromise was erased entirely.
