J.D. Walter - Clear Day download album
Clear Day, recorded in 2000, is an engaging post-bop date that Walter co-leads with soprano and tenor saxophonist/flutist Dave Liebman. Many straight-ahead jazz singers would not have the guts to work with Liebman, an adventurous soloist and composer who isn't afraid to be left of center. But Walter shows himself to be up for the challenge when he provides lyrics for two Liebman pieces ("Beyond the Line" and "Translucence") and scats his way through Liebman 's hauntingly pensive "Mommie Eyes

Walter was born on July 2, 1967, in Abington Township, PA (a Philadelphia suburb), but grew up mostly in the Lancaster/Lebanon area of Pennsylvania (a few hours from Philly). When he was 18 in 1985, Walter moved to the Lone Star State to attend the University of North Texas (where he studied jazz singing thanks to a scholarship). After seven years in Texas, he moved to the Netherlands in 1993 and studied with transplanted American jazz singer Deborah Brown at Amsterdam's Conservatory for the Arts. It was also in 2000 that the singer recorded his second album, Clear Day, an ambitious collaboration with Dave Liebman; Clear Day was released in 2001 by Double-Time Records (a small independent label based in New Albany, IN). ~ Alex Henderson.
Walter is among the promising male jazz vocalists who began recording in the '90s; a relatively small group that also includes, among others, Kurt Elling, Kevin Mahogany, Lou Lanza, Allan Harris, and Giacomo Gates.
On Clear Day, Walter is accompanied by his "other trio" consisting of Ridl on piano, Steve Varner on bass and Ari Hoenig on drums. The contrast with his Jean-Michel Pilc/Steve Varner/Gregory Hutchinson group of Sirens In The C-House is illuminating. Walter has assembled a cracker-jack rhythm section that really could be recording as a piano trio and killing audiences with its attack and virtuosity. I don't know if Sirens In The C-House is a debut album for M. alter, but it sure is an attention-getter.

Walter Dean Myers's last completed YA novel before he passed away at age 76. Ambitious dystopian scope with too-large ensemble of same-ish rogue characters, all with several pages of biographical details combined with next-to-no actual characterization. Does it seem like I read the whole book?
