2 days on the road driving from Austin, Texas to Las Vegas, Nevada. In this first day we stopped in Roswell and Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had the idea of driving from Texas to Las Vegas because we wanted to experience the central region of the USA. We had just moved to Texas a few months earlier and everything was new. Do you know when you hear city names on TV and you have no idea what they mean or represent? Let’s say, if you are in Los Angeles and hear Beverly Hills, you normally get a really good picture in your mind or at least know where it’s located. We had arrived in this gigantic state of Texas, the biggest in the continental US, and we were eager to know our surroundings

If you leave Las Vegas early enough in the day, you'll have time to reach the north end of the park, where Park Service docents provide a "living history" tour of the fascinating and well-preserved Scotty's Castle. Before heading up there, top up your gas tank at Furnace Creek. The gas station at Scotty's Castle is currently closed, and the nearest gas station is about an hour away. By far the closest natural wonder to Las Vegas is Red Rock Canyon, which is a mere 40-minute drive from the Strip. A one-way "scenic loop" through the most picturesque rock formations is like taking a hike without ever leaving your vehicle.

Las Vegas is on the California boarder, so it wouldn’t even take you two days to walk to California, but don’t do that, it’s a desert out there. San Francisco’s would be a great destination. When leaving Las Vegas, stay on high way 15 until you get to high way 101 and high way 1 where possible then go north, and just enjoy the ride. Definitely want to go through Big Sur. Big sir is one of the most magical places on earth.

Our road trip from San Diego, California to Las Vegas, Nevada. Day 1: San Diego – Palm Springs (via Julian for apple pie). We stayed here to explore for the day (plus it bloody well rained) and were pleased we did. There’s an outlet mall about 30 minutes out of town where you can pick up some amazing bargains. Alternatively, when you’ve seen the town, which shouldn’t take too long, head out into the nearby mountains.

The long stretch of road between LA and Vegas is basically a rite of passage for many a 21-year-old Californian. It takes about 4 and half hours (if you go the speed limit) and many believe it is just desolate desert with nothing to do. While a lot of the travelers just want the drive to be fast, there is actually a lot to do on the way. Use this post to make your next drive more of an adventure and less of a race. You don’t have to travel very far off the road to see them because they dot the landscape for miles. The main visitor center and the walk are about 5 minutes off the freeway, and the one-mile loop gives you a lot of great views of the massive sandstone giants. If you have an extra day you can head into Death Valley from here as well. I wouldn’t recommend rushing it though so if you don’t have at least 24 hours then go to the park at a different time.
