For his sophomore effort (his first on a label), New York saxophonist Glenn White has brought together a wide range of influences and stylistic elements, combining it all into one surprisingly coherent work. The album opens with the title track, a dense piece that takes some cues from Coltrane's "Giant Steps" motifs, particularly in the piano comping, excellently provided by Roberta Piket.

Composed By – Glenn White (2) (tracks: 1 to 6), Jamie Baum (tracks: 7). Drums – Jeff Hirshfield. Flute, Alto Flute – Jamie Baum. Guitar – Patrick Hay. Piano, Organ – Roberta Piket. Producer – David Binney. Recorded By, Mixed By, Mastered By – Michael Marciano.

Glenn White updates the smooth yet compositionally exquisite strain of postbop that artists such as Wayne Shorter pioneered in the ’60s. With this release, White proves himself worthy of the jump from self-production to the eclectic but quality-driven OA2 label. White is as accomplished a composer and band leader as saxophonist. The band, Sacred Machines – apparently a working unit – is a marvel. If Glenn White can keep producing discs of this quality, he is assured a long and productive career in the world of jazz.

Glenn White: Sacred Machines by AAJ Italy Staff, published on January 7, 2009.
