Many of those glistening touches have indeed been subtracted by Norton, and they're missed. That Chrome is still a terrific LP proves Catherine Wheel capable of eclipsing the overload. Like another sharp LP that "cranked" for an hour without much sonic letup, Chrome reminds one of Sugar's Copper Blue. Not because Catherine Wheel covered Hüsker Dü on the 30 Century Man EP; it's because that was the last LP that combined this kind of songwriting prowess, raging playing, dynamics, pop tunes gone kablooey, and huge, bonfire sound.

1. Kill Rhythm Lyrics.
There are quite a few album covers out there that flawlessly encapsulate the atmosphere and/or mood of the music contained. Chrome has one of said covers. The darkened underwater environment, coupled with three swimmers posing together in some abstract formation, along with the small sliver of what seems to be a neighborhood or apartment complex cresting the very top of the image. This album certainly has a distinct atmosphere, and this cover is a fine representation of the sound that the band so expertly masters, mixing dream-like euphoria with darkened paranoia, all with a heavily distorted.
The Catherine Wheel (album), a recording of David Byrne's musical score commissioned by Twyla Tharp for her dance project of the same name. The Catherine Wheel (film), a film of the dance, produced by the BBC. The Catherine Wheel is a crime novel by Patricia Wentworth (1949). Chrome, produced by former Pixies producer Gil Norton, has a more metallic musical edge (hence the title) than the band's previous album Ferment and EPs. Peaking at number 26 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, the album was supported by the single "Crank", a number 5 Modern Rock Tracks hit. Music videos were filmed for singles "Crank", "Show Me Mary", and "The Nude".
