Sylvester is the third studio album by Sylvester. It was his first disco album in the series of three that were recorded and released by Fantasy Records in the late 1970s. The album was issued with the alternative title Over and Over in France. Two singles were issued from the album.

His first solo album, Sylvester (1977), was a moderate success. This was followed with the acclaimed disco album Step II (1978), which spawned the singles "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)", both of which were hits in the . After a brief sojourn in England, Sylvester returned to San Francisco and assembled.

Fuqua signed Sylvester and began work on an album. In a stroke of luck, Izora Whitehead and Martha Wash were discovered singing background vocals at a concert and Sylvester jumped at the chance to hire them. Renaming the hefty pair the Two Tons of Fun, they were an integral part of Sylvester's success, adding stage presence as well as reminders of his gospel roots. The other single from the album, "Dance (Disco Heat)," featured the Tons on lead vocals and their performance was pure gospel spirit, so powerful that all Sylvester could do was come in halfway through the song with a scream that anybody familiar with the black church will recognize as the "happy shout.
