Songwriter – Doug Martsch (tracks: A1 to A6, B8 to B11). Recorded at the Manhouse, Fall 1999-Spring 2000. Mastered at Masterworks, Seattle, WA. Thanks to all who helped bring this record out.

Singer/guitarist Doug Martsch of Built to Spill is a major guitar wanker. He also has an attractive whine of a voice and he has on occasion written some excellent tunes throughout his career. On his first solo record, he plays some fine slide guitar, especially on "Window," where he slithers around on the instrument like he was born in Mississippi rather than Idaho, and also "Gone," which has a lovely chorus and is probably one of the finest songs he's penned.

Don’t worry pre-teens, Uncle Doug looks a little strange and his voice is a tad high, but you have nothing to fear (it’s not that kind of camping trip). It seems he’s discovered slide guitar and the lyrical qualities it affords him in songwriting. In all seriousness, Now You Know feels like an intimate glimpse into the personal triumph and tragedy of this solemn figure. The lyrics are mostly straight forward and allow the listener some opportunity for personal interpretation. Lines such as Now you should know by now, it’s a small sound that holds you down are genius to some (.

Doug Martsch (born 1969) is an American singer and musician. He is best known for his distinctive vocals and guitar playing style in the band Built to Spill. Martsch's first band was Farm Days, with Andy Capps and Brett Nelson in the early 1980s. His second band was Treepeople, with whom he released three albums and two EPs. He has been the lead singer and guitarist of Built to Spill since 1992. With Built to Spill, he developed a reputation as a preeminent indie rock guitarist; his guitar playing style blends rock, pop, blues, and folk. Unlike Martsch's rock-oriented work with Built to Spill, the album touches on blues and folk in addition to rock. Now You Know was released in 2002 on Up Records label.

Indeed, Doug Martsch has made his blues album. Since 1993, Martsch has been kicking out poptastic classic rock with his full-time unit Built to Spill, crafting crazily infectious hooks and ripping Malmsteen solos that'd fit nicely between The Who and Styx on your local oldster-demographic FM stop. In accordance with this image, it should surprise no one that Martsch has made this record- the solo blues album is a textbook 70s move. So what do we now know from Now You Know? Well, as is the norm for the publicity-shy Martsch, very little. Only Doug would release an experiment with new influences as the first record under his Christian name (not to mention that he admits picking up said influences only recently).

Built to Spill's Doug Martsch finally made room for a solo career in early 2002. This singer/songwriter was an underground, cult hero among the indie crowd, but allowed his eclectic side to come alive in the release of Now You Know that fall. Signed to Warner Bros. Martsch recorded Now You Know in his hometown of Boise at his own Manhouse Studios over the course of 1999 and 2000. His classic assemblage of folk, blues, and classic rock impressed critics, leaving Martsch to craft another musical outlet for himself. Tours across North America followed into early 2003
