Although volcanoes have been mapped on our neighboring planet’s surface, some scientists believe the majority of them have remained inactive - at least since the last few hundreds of thousands of years. Now, thanks to NASA’s Pioneer Venus and ESA’s Venus Express orbiters, scientists have nearly 40 years of data on Venus’ atmosphere - and therein lies evidence of much more recent large-scale volcanic activity.
Active volcanoes are those which are liable to erupt or haveshown frequent eruptions within recent history. They are ones that still erupt at (irregular) intervals, oftengently emitting gases and steam during their quiescent spells. Some examples of active volcanoes are Mount Etna in Sicily, Kilauea in Hawaii, Mount St. Helens in the US, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, Krakatoa in Indonesia and Mount V. uvius in Italy.
The volcanoes below are considered especially dangerous due to latest eruptions and human impact. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption caused the former island to be connected with the Osumi Peninsula. The volcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earlier eruptions built the white sands highlands in the region. The lava connected the island to the mainland – Sakurajima. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularly since 1548. T housands of people live on the flanks of the volcano.
The active volcanoes are either erupting continuously or have erupted in Holocene (last 10,000 years) period and are no more erupting. Several volcanoes have been in existence for thousands (and some even millions) of years, some of which are known to have been erupting incessantly. However, many volcanoes never erupt in a human lifetime. Smokes, hot gas emissions and unusual earthquake activity are the signs of volcanic unrest and that it’s an active volcano.
List of active volcanoes includes volcanoes which are erupting, or have erupted in modern times. Many volcanos have erupted dozens of times in the past few thousand years, but are not erupting at this moment. Some scientists consider a volcano active if it has erupted in the holocene (historic times) period. Most volcanoes live many thousands of years and erupt many times. However, most don't erupt even once in a human lifespan
