The Dead Horses sound like a good bar band should, and they give this album much more energy. At times, it almost feels like a live recording. Lyrically, Roadhouse Sun finds Bingham trying his hand at some political themes. Racism and immigrants are topics explored in Dylan’s Hard Rain, and the sound (as well as the indictment of American policies) on Endless Ways is reminiscent of some of John Mellencamp’s output. The level of instrumentation points back to southern rock from the 70s, although it never approaches the point of overkill. There’s a bit in Change Is that makes me wonder.

Ryan Bingham has officially coalesced his side men into a band, The Dead Horses, and whether it's that formal assembly, or some seasoning from more time on the road and in the studio, or just something in the water (or whatever he is drinking), he has taken a big step from his good first recording, "Mescalito," to his excellent second release, "Roadhouse. Su. The up-tempo, sizzling songs that make up most of this album could kindle a sagebrush fire, especially when the band locks step and cranks it up on tracks such as Endless Ways which leads into the show-stopping. Roadhouse Sun is a worthy follow-up to Bingham's brilliant Mescalito album (2007) and fans of folk rock, country rock, or Americana music should enjoy it thoroughly.

American singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham joined with his band The Dead Horses to release two albums: Roadhouse Sun in 2009 and Junky Star in 2010. Junky Star is Bingham’s highest charting and most successful release to date. The Dead Horses are Matthew Smith (drums), Corby Schaub (guitar and mandolin) and Elijah Ford (bass). Bingham parted ways with The Dead Horses, and also with his then record label Lost Highway Records, in 2012.

Bingham and his skilled band, the Dead Horses, weave threads of rock (most notably using jangly, Byrds-inspired guitars on "Dylan's Hard Rain"), bluegrass (the terrific "Tell My Mother I Miss Her So"), and raggedy blues (augmented by the influence of producer/former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford) throughout the (mostly) seamless fabric of Roadhouse Sun. Lyrically, Bingham isn't simply content to cry into his beer or wrestle his personal demons only; more universally-focused tracks like "Endless Ways" and "Dylan's Hard Rain", an attempt. Roadhouse Sun isn't perfect; a few tracks bring the album back to earth and remind that Bingham is only two albums into a bright-lights, major-label career. For example, "Hey Hey Hurray" is probably the least tuneful, least focused track on the album.
