PUP - The Dream Is Over download album
The Dream Is Over is the second album by Canadian punk rock band PUP, released on May 27, 2016, through Royal Mountain Records in Canada and SideOneDummy Records worldwide. The album was recorded with the financial support of Canada's Private Radio Broadcasters. The album title comes from the doctor of lead singer Stefan Babcock, after the doctor found out about a problem with Babcock's vocal cords.
PUP’s second full length album, The Dream Is Over was released on May 27, 2016. The band had toured for over a year after their first album, playing 250+ shows with a catalog that still consisted only of songs from their first, self-titled album. When the time came to record a new album, the group was faced with the obstacle of their vocalist, Stefan Babcock, hemorrhaging his vocal cords. As outlined in a Noisey article from 2016, on the first day of a tour opening for Modern Baseball, Babcock learned that a cyst had developed on his vocal cords which ended up hemorrhaging.
PUP's second album is a glorious half-hour of redlining guitars and pile-on group chants that turn self-loathing and self-deprecation into a sort of superpower. Whereas most music of this sort never tries to sound like more than a couple guys in a room, PUP’s approach is so over-the-top that it can sound as CGI’d as any chart-pop; you have to see it in person just to find out if they can really pull this off. Can they really nail the heart-stopping segue between If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You and DVP ? How can anyone play as melodically and as fast as they do on DVP ? On every single chorus, the four members of PUP sound like 4000, is that really how it comes off in a room or is it because they rightfully expect everyone in the crowd to shout along?

In many ways, The Dream Is Over is a record that perfectly captures the moment between bottoming out and rising above.
The Dream Is Over embraces this contradiction to its fullest extent, feeding off the frustrations of the individual while gathering its raw power from the group. Oftentimes Babcock’s lyrics paint a picture of his own private hell, an interior landscape dominated by self-hatred and regret. You know I’ve never been good at anything/ Except for fucking up and ruining everything, he screams on hardcore ripper Old Wounds, the album’s aggro centerpiece . Coming at the very end of the album, it’s the moment that showcases PUP in their truest form - a ball of anger, slowly gravitating toward something bigger. Essential Tracks: DVP, Old Wounds, and Pine Point.
