Ibolyka Astrid Maria Varnay (25 April 1918 – 4 September 2006) was a Swedish-born American dramatic soprano of Hungarian descent. She spent most of her career in the United States and Germany. She was one of the leading Wagnerian heroic sopranos of her generation. Her voice on record is readily recognisable by its fiery tone and seemingly limitless upper register.

Ibolyka Astrid Maria Varnay (25 April 1918 – 4 September 2006) was an American dramatic soprano of Hungarian heritage and Swedish birth, who did most of her work in the United States and Germany.
Astrid Varnay was one ofe most notable Wagnerian sopranos of the mid twentieth century, active both in the United States and Europe, and she sang regularly at Bayreuth. This collection brings together studio recordings of selections from eight Wagner operas, made relatively early in her career, and her strength and artistry are evident in all of the excerpts presented here.

Astrid Varnay was born in Stockholm in 1918; her father, Alexander Varnay, was a Hungarian tenor who became stage director of the Norwegian Opera in Oslo. Her mother, also a singer, the coloratura soprano Maria Yavor, took Astrid when still a very small child to the United States. Originally intending to become a pianist, Varnay studied for eight years at the New Jersey Musical College.
