Diarrhea Planet tap into the youthful excitement of music, those years many of us spend head-banging in front of a mirror, idolizing guitar gods with posters on our walls, and thinking we’ll be just like them someday. That sense of wonder and joy can fade as you get older, yet these guys continue to mine that feeling. Turn to Gold may be one of the most hopeful and transparent records to come out this year. But Diarrhea Planet draw from those familiar sounds and feelings to create something new and self-aware. Cynicism enters our lives and we begin to realize that maybe rock and roll can’t change the world like we thought it could when we were kids.

Peel away the fuzzy exterior, and the band alludes to battles with depression and stagnation ("Dune"), love and friendships ("Lie Down," "Ruby Red"), and feeling paralyzed in a ess spiral ("Let It Out")  . As he name-drops the shuttered pace called Glenn Danzig's House, Smith reflects on losing something authentic in the name of progress - "Watch the places I love turn into a playground for those who can afford" - just as the song erupts in an angry squall of noise the new neighbors would surely hate.

Turn To Gold is an album that does a little bit of it all to demonstrate that it can do it all. Whereas Diarrhea Planet’s earlier efforts would unapologetically let these performances devolve into chaos, the group now keeps the madness contained within strategically constructed arrangements. The noise collage is successfully crafted into enjoyable songs. Diarrhea Planet strikes me as the kind of band that thrives within their niche and aren't exactly looking to leave it anytime soon. Turn To Gold would certainly say that's the case.
