Magda Olivero, née Maria Maddalena Olivero (25 March 1910 – 8 September 2014), was an Italian operatic soprano. She has been regarded as "one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century".
Magda Olivero (née Maria Maddalena Olivero, March 25, 1910) is a soprano of the verismo-school of singing. She was born in Saluzzo, Italy. Olivero made her operatic debut in 1932 on Turin radio in Cattozzo’s oratorio I misteri dolorosi.
The Italian soprano Magda Olivero (née Maria Maddalena Olivero), studied in Turin with Luigi Gerussi, Luigi Ricci and Giorgio Federico Ghedini. Magda Olivero began her career taking unfruitful auditions for Italian radio. Eventually accepted as a pupil by Luigi Gerussi, she finally made her radio debut in 1932 as Mary Magdalene in Nino Cattozzo's (1886-1961) rather obscure oratorio I Misteri Dolorosi. After further studies in Turin, she made her first stage appearance as Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi at the city's Teatro Victorio Emanuele.
THE indomitable and apparently indestructible Magda Olivero returned to New York for a recital in Carnegie Hall Saturday night. Her career is now in its 47th year, and the facts say that she will be 70 next March. If time has not exactly stood still for her, it has nonetheless moved slowly. She has made few concessions to age, tackling arduous roles and their high C's with power, brilliance and dramatic ferocity. There were no high C's at this recital. Instead, Miss Olivero displayed the subtler side of her art in a program of French and Italian arias and songs.
