The SDR Big Band With Frank Foster - A Tribute To Thad Jones download album

Frank Foster is their special guest, leading the band through a series of his charts and a few by another Count Basie alum, the late Thad Jones, though many of these compositions deserve to be more widely known. The band swings while sounding a bit more modern than Basie's recordings of these charts, which should come as no surprise as the original recordings were made decades earlier by a very different lineup.

Jones, who died in 1986, was a member of the Basie trumpet section from 1954-63 and co-led the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) from 1966-78. He is remembered as a remarkable composer who penned such memorable Jazz standards as "A Child Is Born, "Don't Git Sassy, "Fingers, "Tip Toe, "Little Pixie, "Groove Merchant, "Big Dipper, "Greetings and Salutations, "Kids Are Pretty People and "Mean What You Say, the last included on this album. It always helps, of course, to have a world-class band in one's corner, and that is precisely what the SWR is.

Besides Neal Hefti and Quincy Jones it was particularly Foster and Thad Jones (celebrated on this CD), who determined the distinctive sound of the Basie Band with their arrangements in the Fifties and Sixties. After Basies death in 1984, Foster advanced to the position of the new band leader of the Basie Organisation from 1986 until 1995. During this period, he seized the opportunity to indulge in his fondness of composing and arranging. Two of his most popular works are the catchy Shiny Stockings, which hit the jazz charts all over the world in 1956, and the Lake Placid Suite he composed for.
