New Wave music meant a lot of things in the late 1970s. It encompassed pretty much everything that followed the punk movement that still served as an alternative to mainstream pop and rock. There was power-pop, neo-psychedelia, acid-punk, art rock and lots and lots of keyboards. In many ways, New Wave gave hope to independent bands playing in burgeoning local scenes. New wave is a genre of rock music with ties to 1970s punk rock that became popular in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Perhaps few of us knew it at the time, but the groundbreaking all-female Go-Go's actually held one of the most intimate connections to punk rock of all new wave acts, having cut their teeth in the late-'70s Los Angeles scene. The group's bright sound exhibited in its early-'80s hits may not have obviously reflected that fact, but while they lasted, the Go-Go's earned massive popularity through solid songwriting and savvy production.

The Top 100 '80s Rock Albums span a series of genres as startling and varied as the era's neon-flecked fashions. Meanwhile, classic rock and subsequently metal began a transformation into mass acceptance when the edges were smoothed out to form arena rock and hair metal, respectively.
