Reviews about haujobb. - Freeze Frame Reality (2):
Viashal
Although their debut 'Homes & Gardens' was written off as just another Skinny Puppy clone by many. Most would have to agree, Haujobb did it much better than most. This mark of top tier quality would follow Myer and Co. throughout their careers, and numerous side projects and genres. This sophomore release began to shape what was missing in their debut, a sound of their own. It wouldn't be fully realized until the next album 'SFASP', but this shook off the "Puppy" sound, and traded it for a more polished, better produced, icy cold, precision of sound that was a welcome new direction, and quantum leap forward in the electro-industrial/EBM sound of the time. It also added electric guitar to some of the tracks, but fused into the mix, just like the synths, and not just trading a Puppy clone sound for another NIN [clone] guitar rock sound (although 'Cold Comfort' is somewhat of an exception). 'Solid State Logic' and 'Perfect Average' are wonderful examples of this mix. The finales of both of those tracks are very satisfying, and things that leave me grinning from ear to ear, even today. 'World Window' is another superb, and epic track, and probably the most dance floor oriented track on the album ('Cold Comfort' tried, but missed the mark by drowning out the sound with driving electric guitars and monotonous yelling). Except for two tracks, most of the other tracks follow a medium paced tempo, of well crafted, precision electro, with a flavor of icy cold ambiance about them. The other two deserve special mention. 'Consciousness' is the closest we come to a ballad on the album, but I wouldn't quite describe it that way. It's a very dreamy, cerebral, high-tech/cyber-punk sounding, chillout track. Great for late night headphone listening. Last, but certainly least, there's 'Sensor'. A twelve plus minute magnum opus, and ambient masterpiece. The level of atmosphere, complexity, and mixing displayed in this track is nothing short of phenomenal. To put it another way, in my two plus decades of listening to a wide variety of electronic music, in dozens of genres and sub-genres, I have yet to hear an ambient track of this quality and craftsmanship, that I like better. And I challenge ANYONE to change that for me!

Maybe not as polished as the following LP "Solutions For A Small Planet", this album has its moments. Songs like "Solid State Logic", "Sensor" & "Consciousness" were the forerunners of great things to come for Haujobb, while "World Window" remains a personnal all-time favorite. It sure was breaking new grounds in the shallow electro-industrial scene back then, and a great departure from the Skinny Puppiesque ripoff that "Homes & Garden" was. I'm pretty sure FFR was an inspiration for the next wave of electro-industrial artists of the 90s.
