Senghor went back to Senegal in 1960 with radical plans for African Theater. He greatly expanded the dramatic arts in that area, becoming the first theater director in the continent and setting up many institutions of the stage. However, he grew bitter with the lack of governmental support for the arts and was sort of forced out of the position he created for himself. He moved back to France in 1996 where he would live out the rest of his life. Released on Counterpoint Records I think sometime around 1950, this album leans heavily on the music from French African territories such as Guinea, Cameroon, and of course Senegal. It features both songs and rhythms from these territories as well as others. Really good record which could have used the benefit of coverage at the beginning of the month rather than the end when I am just trying to get these posts out the door.
Track A4 reads "Gnounba Gnibi" on the center label, but "Gnoubi Gnibi" on the LP sleeve. Track A8 appears to read "Didrenquo" on the center label, but reads "Didrenouo" clearly on the back. Track B8 reads "Mbatalaya" on the center label and "Mbatilaya" on the LP sleeve.
