At the start of 1972 the Grateful Dead were on a roll. After struggling for years to reach mainstream success the Dead released two hit albums in 1970, the classics American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. In 1971 the band released their first commercially successful live album, the self-titled album more commonly known as Skull & Roses. The Grateful Dead have had many creative peaks, but perhaps the most famous incarnation is the one that invaded Europe in April of 1972. When the Grateful Dead packed up for their European tour it was like a vacation for them.

The Grateful Dead commemorated their first extended European tour with an extravagant triple-LP set appropriately enough titled Europe '72. This collection is fashioned in much the same way as their previous release - which had also been a live multi-disc affair. With the additional album the band was able to again incorporate some of their exceedingly stretched-out instrumental improvisations - titled "Epilogue" and "Prelude" here. Since their last outing, the group had expanded to include the husband-and-wife team of Keith Godchaux (keyboards) and Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals).

The Grateful Dead in 1972 were of course Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir along with Keith and Donna Godchaux, Phil Lesh, Ron (Pig Pen) McKernan and Bill Kreutzman. Special Mention to Robert Hunter whose lyrics are all over the album. One of the things that I had forgotten about was that Mickey Hart was NOT on Europe ’72. I had forgotten that he left the band for a few years in the early 70s. Now I know. Europe ’72 peaked at on the Billboard Album Chart. The only single to chart was Sugar Magnolia which reached in the Billboard Singles Chart. The Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock and.

Great pressing! I don't have the original to compare but I can't imagine it sounding better than this reissue. Great packaging, too. Very impressive.
