Complete your The Grateful Dead collection. This is not the average Grateful Dead album (that's why many GD fans don't favor it), it stands out from the rest but I think it stands on its own firmly. The A side of the record is like the other GD records on Arista - with a more studio-like sound and a bit of disco, but the B side is what this record is really about; something that the band never did before, didn't repeat and completely breaks away from the band's usual sound.

It was the first Grateful Dead album on Arista Records and the first studio album after the band returned to live touring, following a nearly two-year hiatus. The album reached No. 28 on the Billboard Album Chart and achieved gold album status in 1987, after being released for the first time on CD (by Arista Records) following the release of that year's In the Dark

Each with amazing talent, and both helped to define The Grateful Dead’s spectacular mid to late 1970’s live performances. The two drummers, Mickey and Billy are included. And instrumentally, they do great. And Jerry, Phil, and Bob do a fabulous job instrumentally also. The album really only has two highlights. And the fabulous and interesting arrangement of the traditional Samson Delilah.

In 1974, the Grateful Dead decided to take a hiatus from live touring and, for the next two years, the only band activity was the recording and release of the eccentric 1975 studio album Blues For Allah. In June 1976, the group resumed touring under new management and their Spring 1977 tour has been held in high regard as some of the best performances of their long career. Olsen made a concerted effort to deliver a song cycle which could break through commercially.
