Scored for double string quartet and double bass, Last Round begins with a fast section that literally pummels the listener into attention; once it has done that, it never lets go. It is followed by Lullaby and Doina, which is the most comfortably approachable music here. The title work, Yiddishbbuk, is both the oldest and most in-your-face work on the disc, but that shouldn't stop anyone from checking it out. Listeners who enjoy the string quartet music of Stravinsky and Charles Ives will doubtless find something to enjoy in Yiddishbbuk.

Yiddishbbuk," written for the St. Lawrence Quartet on Tanglewood's Fromm Commission, is inspired by a line from an apocryphal psalm: "No one sings as purely as those who are in the deepest hell. Its first movement commemorates three children who perished in the Nazi concentration camp Terezin. Golijov evokes their anguish in music that is by turns wild, raucous, slashing, mysterious, eerie, and always heart-rending. I've only recently discovered the work of Osvaldo Golijov, but I think he is the most interesting new composer I have come across in the last ten years. His music manages to be melodic, harmonic and passionate without ever really sounding derivative. The St Lawrence string quartet was magnificent in performing Goliuov's Qohelet. I couldn't find that particular piece of music on a CD, so I bought Golijov's YIddishbbuk performed by the St. Lawrence quartet.
