Jazz harpist Carol Robbins performs a dozen standards and her own "Qualcosa" as straight-ahead jazz on this 1995 CD. Joined by bassist Dave Stone, drummer Gordon Peeke, and (on eight of the 13 songs) Bob Sheppard (on tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet), Robbins adds beauty and swing to such numbers as "Dolphin Dance," "I Hear a Rhapsody," "A Child Is Born," "Star Eyes," and "Alone Together.
Although classically trained, Carol Robbins has become a very accomplished jazz artist, and her playing on Three & Four (so named because she works with trio and quartet) bears that out. Her primary companion on the disc, saxophonist Bob Sheppard, is the equal of any saxophonist these mature ears have ever heard. 1. Dolphin Dance 5:08. 2. Sometime Ago 2:56. 3. Three And Four" is a collection of standards played by jazz harpist Carol Robbins. All of the selections are played with a rhythm section and many feature world-class reedman Bob Sheppard. Carol Robbins was a student of the great jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby and is one of the best of the very small group of people in the world who can play jazz on the harp. Carol Robbins is a very accomplished jazz artist, and her playing on Three And Four bears that out. - - Bob Perkins WRTI Tempo Magazine.

Jazz Play expands on Robbins' previous CDs "Three And Four" and "Chords In Blue" by adding the world-class talents of guitarist Larry Koonse and trumpeter Steve Huffsteter. She brings back renowned saxophonist Bob Sheppard and plays with a new rhythm section, consisting of Darek Oles on bass and Tim Pleasant on drums. Two of the songs from this album can be heard in the movie and on the soundtrack CD of The Devil Wears Prada. The song Bittersweet Faith features a harp solo improvised by Robbins. The group did an in-studio performance and interview on radio station KCRW in April of 2006. Ms Robbins released her third CD Jazz Play in February of 2006.
Carol Robbins is a new name to me but this is her fourth album, and she has also been an important member of Billy Childs' Jazz Chamber Ensemble. Billy is the pianist on this session, which includes five compositions by Carol Robbins and one by Billy Childs. You might think that, as this album has Carol Robbins as leader, she would have been recorded with the volume she deserves. In Three Rings (another Robbins composition), the harp plays a decorative role behind other instruments before Carol delivers another short solo. The harp is happily more dominant in Dolore, which is lyrical rather than jazzy - but then the harp is an instrument with built-in lyricism. In fact most of the tunes are slow ballads, like Every Time We Say Goodbye, which is performed tenderly by Carol, although Billy Childs' piano overlaps the harp, muddying the sound.
