While Hella's longtime, close-knit lineup of founders Spencer Seim and Zach Hill allowed for such a fluid shifting of gears, last year's Acoustic marked the first time the band recorded as a quintet. On There's No 666 in Outer Space, Hella's first release on Ipecac, that quintet gets completely revamped (save for Seim and Hill) and the band's sound gets jacked up. Although difficult to tell with such a protean group, 666 seems to represent a shift for Hella

Further peaking my interest in "There's No 666 in Outer Space" was the buzz around the Mars Volta's fan board, The Comatorium. Members of that board were heralding it as the closest thing to TMV's first LP, Deloused in The Comatorium. So, with reluctance, I downloaded the album when it first leaked in late November 2006. What came out when I first played the album was nothing that I had expected. Gone were Hella's typical inane jams, and in their place was a highly focused, extremely technical, and most importantly lush form of rock music

There's no simplicity, no chorus-verse-chorus and definitely no single. Their trademark sound is still intact and jaw dropping as it ever was. The new members of the band may have a hard time keeping up with Zach and Spencer, but in the sound of the album they aren't any slouches. It was the first song that caught my attention on the album with its overtly complex playing and strong sense of melody which is a thing not many bands managed to do, and you can rest assured that all of the song on the album has those two great qualities.
