From her to eternity! I read her diary on her sheets Scrutinizing every little piece of dirt Tore out a page and stuffed it inside my shirt Fled outta the window And shinning it down the vine Outta her nightmare And back into mine Mine! O Mine! From her to eternity! From her to eternity! From her to eternity! Cry! Cry! Cry! She's wearing them bloo-stockens, I bet! And standin' like this with my ear to the ceiling Listen I know it must sound absurd But I can hear the most melancholy sound I ever heard! Walk and cry, kneel and cry! From her to eter.

From Her to Eternity is the debut studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, released on 18 June 1984 on Mute. Produced by Flood and the band itself, the album's title is a pun on the James Jones novel, From Here to Eternity, and its subsequent 1953 film adaptation. After the breakup of Nick Cave's former band The Birthday Party, Cave formed a new project with former band member Mick Harvey.

Today, 30 years ago in 1984, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released their debut, ‘From Her to Eternity,’ featuring the Leonard Cohen cover of Avalanche, the single In the Ghetto on CD reissues, and a title track that 3 years later caused Angels and Trapeze artists to fall in love under the skies of Berlin. This classic album was fresh off the breakup of The Birthday Party, and was the beginning of a long collaboration between Nick Cave and Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten.

Ah wanna tell ya 'bout a girl You know, she lives in Room 29 Why that's the one right up top a mine Ah start to cry, ah start to cry-y O ah hear her walkin' Walkin' barefoot cross the floorboards All through this lonesome night And ah hear her crying too Hot tears come splashin' down Leakin' through the cracks. Down upon my face, ah catch 'em in my mouth! Walk 'n' Cry, Walk 'n' Cry-y! From her to eternity From her to eternity From her to eternity Ah read her diary on her sheets Scrutinizin' ev'ry li'l piece of dirt

Featuring fellow Party refugee Mick Harvey as well as Barry Adamson, Anita Lane, Hugo Race and Blixa Bargeld, the Bad Seeds’ debut album From Her to Eternity was recorded across a laboured six-month stretch between September 1983 and March 1984. Among the first tracks completed was the album’s closer, the funeral dirge ‘A Box for Black Paul’ in which Cave solemnly lays the Birthday Party to rest, lauding its distinctive powers and decrying their critics and the hacks in the British music press. However, on From Her to Eternity it seemed that Cave was admitting that the detractors were kinda.

Nick Cave launched his solo career in style with From Her to Eternity, an accomplished album mixing the frenzy and power of his Birthday Party days with a dank, moody atmosphere that showed he was not interested in simply continuing what the older group had done. To be sure, Mick Harvey joined him from the Party days, as ever playing a variety of instruments, while one-time Party guest Blixa Bargeld now became a permanent Cave partner, splitting his time between the Bad Seeds and Einsturzende Neubaten ever since. The title track is and remains a Bad Seeds classic, played at shows up through the present, a tense piano/organ beginning then accompanied by the edgy build of the band, pounding drums, stabbing feedback and keyboard parts and more.
