Matters aren't helped much by the presence of Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas" - a fine, faithful rendition that closes off the record on a sweet note - and the crisp, digital modern sheen of the opener "Funnel of Love," elements that pull Detour even further down a winding backroad.
Detour is a companion piece to Memphis Blues, Lauper says, but where its predecessor homaged blues musicians, the new album focuses on classic country songs of the ’50s and ’60s. Memphis Blues featured contributions from such luminaries as . King and Allen Toussaint, and Lauper once again teamed up with top-level talent for Detour, including Willie Nelson. I tried to be professional, but you know when you’re overwhelmed - when he came in, I almost cried, Lauper says of her first meeting with the legendary songwriter. Another big influence on Detour was Dolly Parton. Parton doesn’t appear.
Any record that kicks off with a righteously wacked-out cover of Wanda Jackson ‘s legendary Funnel Of Love and ends with a prayer-like interpretation of Dolly Parton ‘s Hard Candy Christmas has its heart in the right place, especially one powered by the ageless, effortlessly powerful voice of Cyndi Lauper. That iconic voice - its mush-mouthed vowels, supersonic yipping, and belting soar - is an unexpected fit for country, and it takes about two listens to get past the surprise factor and into the heart of the songs. All in all, Detour is a bold and exciting move from a true maverick who, throughout all her experimentations, remains instantly recognizable and ever-lovable. Idolator Score: . /5. Detour showcases Lauper's take on country songs made popular in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, like two Pasty Cline songs, "Walkin' After Midnight" and "I Fall to Pieces. I spent a lot of time in my room singing with Patsy," Lauper says in a press release. I had to sing a Patsy Cline song - or two - because her voice was like one of my girlfriends. That's how close I felt to he. Lauper recorded Detour in Nashville. It is her first release on Sire Records and was produced by Seymour Stein. She says she has dreamed about recording.
