Valentyne Suite was the second album released by the band Colosseum. It was Vertigo Records' first album release, and reached number 15 in the UK Albums Chart in 1969.
Valentyne Suite" is Colosseum's second album, which in some ways shows an improvement on their impressive debut. The artistic relevance of this piece for the germination of prog rock can easily be accurately regarded as equal to that of the Nice's 'Ars Longa, Vita Brevis', Pink Floyd's 'Interstellar Overdrive', and King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man'. However, as much as the suite is the absolute highlight to this album, we must not overlook the remaining repertoire.
One of England's prime jazz-rock - or, more accurately, rock-jazz - outfits, most of the members of Colosseum had apprenticed in blues bands, and it shows very strongly on some of the material here. Both "The Kettle" and "Butty's Blues" are essentially tarted-up 12-bar blues, although they work well in a grander context; in the latter case much grander, as a brass ensemble enters for the last part, drowning out everything but the guitar, an indication that this recording is in dire need of remastering.
Colosseum 1969 Valentyne Suite. Second album from this groundbreaking quintet that had offered us much of a thrill with their debut. Again here, if you are looking for the vinyl, please be aware that this album came out with a very close-looking version in America, but a completely different track list and is titled, The Grass Is Greener 5BTW, I distinctly remember a first version of Lost Angeles on this version of the album).
This album has an average beat per minute of 126 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 66/174 BPM). See the BPM profile of this album. Tracklist - Valentyne Suite.
Colosseum – Valentyne Suite. Article by: Mel Allen. What more can one say about Colosseum? Their place in the history of jazz rock fusion is well known and deserved. The original album was released in November 1969 on the then newly established Vertigo label, initially doing very well. I have a copy of the 2006 Sanctuary Records release of this album and in comparison this new version is definitely sharper, a more defined sound which has cleaned up the individual instruments. Ben Wiseman’s 24-bit digital re-mastering, at Broadlake Studios in Hertfordshire, has clearly done a very good job. The first CD, which contains the original album, sounds very good across the five main tracks, the title track, The Valentyne Suite, particularly so as the re-mastering.
