One of the greatest German conductors of the 20th century, Karl Böhm, conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, with a distinguished cast that includes the German baritone Hermann Uhde (Don Pizarro), Austrian bass Oskar Czerwenka (Rocco) and three memorable American singers soprano Laurel Hurley (Marzellina), tenor Charles Anthony (Jaquino) and bass Giorgio Tozzi (Don Fernando).

Fidelio is Beethoven’s only opera. Composed over a period of nearly 10 years, from the first failure in 1805 to the final version of 1814, this romantic drama, a musician’s delight, underwent many reworkings. He wrote no fewer than four overtures to this opera and was never completely satisfied with any of them. The libretto was inspired by an actual incident from the French Revolution, in which a woman dressed as a man was hired as a prison gaoler and managed to free her incarcerated husband.

Beethoven found a new project in a libretto by the theatre secretary, Joseph Sonnleithner, who had adapted it from a 1798 French opera by Pierre Gaveaux that, in turn, had been based on a trendy "rescue" play by Jean Nicholas Bouilly – Léonore ou L'amour conjugal (Leonore, or Conjugal Love), which Bouilly claimed to have based on a true incident during the Reign. of Terror, although he shifted the era and locale to 18th Century Spain. Indeed, Fidelio's thematic appeal has only grown in time. After all we have experienced and suffered in recent times, this religious faith has never seemed so essential as it does today. This is what constitutes the unique power and grandeur of Fidelio.
