Paul van Nevel and his Huelgas Ensemble has made a huge contribution to the Early Music movement since their formation in 1977. This disc, from 1992, is one of my favourites from their huge discography. There have been a lot of terrific recordings of Gombert since, but this was my first introduction to his music and I think it has held up very well. The music is wonderful; it is a selection of motets, two Magnificats and a great mass setting by a true master. Paul van Nevel uses the lower pitch of the Flemish tradition which, combined with Gombert's penchant for what van Nevel describes as "gloomy timbres" produces a very rich sound. The combination of this, the resonant acoustic and the recording sometimes mean that the sound is a little blurred and indistinct. This is fine by me because I think it's a thrilling sound but if you prefer to hear distinct lines throughout it may be something to bear in mind.
