The Art of Self Defense is the debut studio album for High on Fire. It was released originally by Man's Ruin Records in 2000. All songs composed by High On Fire unless stated. 10,000 Years" – 7:53. Throughout 99’, High On Fire continued writing for their debut full-length. The band recorded their debut with Sleep engineer/producer Billy Anderson at Shark Bite Studios in Oakland, CA. The Art of Self Defense served up a rock hard, unorthodox form of modern metal cloaked in strange religious theology and the trio’s style was unique, distinct, HEAVY as all fuck and absolutely crushing. The album immediately became a cult classic and not even the the closure of the label that released the album (Mans’ Ruin) could stop the powerhouse that had been unleashed. Tee Pee records reissued the album.

The album also sees Pike tackling lead vocals for the first time (bassist Al Cisneros handled vocal duties in Sleep), and though his voice is buried somewhat low in the overall mix (lack of confidence perhaps?), this only places more emphasis on the true focus of High on Fire - his bludgeoning guitar riffs. The heaviest of these serves as the backbone for the album's best track "Last," which simply must be heard to be believed. A promising new start for a genuine talent.

After Sleep disbanded after constant problems with releasing their stoner masterpiece "Dopesmoker", Matt Pike went on to create High on Fire with his own twist on what had already been accomplished with Sleep. High on Fire is bass heavy and has great basslines and, has some real tasty, fiery, ember-like guitar tones and riffs from the stoner God, Matt Pike. Matt Pike took elements of his former band and added some speed and heavy metal elements to it as well to create something heavy and awesome. It all started on this album here, Art of Self-Defense
