Rafael Kubelik conducted this 1964 recording. Fisher-Dieskau could also do Rossini. This 1956 performance for RAI is Tell’s third act aria ‘Sois immobile’ in Italian. Gugliemo Tell Resta immobile. This is the scene when Tell asks his son to stay very still before the famous apple shot. This is as Italianate a rendition as could be expected from anyone south of the Alps. Fischer-Dieskau shows how much Wagner gains when sung by a singer with a great sense of vocal line and who fully expresses the intent of the music. There is no barking here. Mozart was an integral part of the baritone’s repertoire. Here is the Count’s third act aria from Le Nozze di Figaro – Vedrò mentr’io sospiro. Richard Strauss’ song Morgen is one of his most beautiful and famous. It was written in 1894 when the composer was 29 years old. This is the original version.
Wagner – Parsifal (Kubelik). Kurt Moll, with his big cavernous sound, keeps it in check for all but the most extroverted, extravagant moments (recognizing Parsifal in Act 3, et., and if he never quite sounds as weary in Act 3 as Hans Hotter does, he certainly sings the role more beautifully than anyone else in memory. He also exudes true authority and a type of cosmic calm when he must-his voice is in perfect condition and his pianissimos are beautiful. In all, no complaints about his excellent performance
This recording of Parsifal is one of the best ever made. The sound is excellent, and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, paced by Kubelik, plays superbly! The singers are all excellent. James King, in the title role, does not have the vocal heft of a true heldentenor, or "tenore di forza. Rafael Kubelik's flawlessly proportioned, profoundly felt reading of this most ephemeral of Wagner's operas equals the best of Knapperstbusch's live Bayreuth performances with all the advantages of a studio recording: the orchestra and choruses are exceptionally detailed and transparent without any loss of weight in the sound, so all inner voices can be clearly heard.
Fischer-Dieskau quickly made his mark internationally, appearing as a guest at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich, the Hamburg State Opera and the Vienna State Opera, and from 1949 undertaking concert tours across France, Italy, Holland and Switzerland. He first appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1951, singing Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen with Furtwängler conducting, and returned regularly from 1956 until 1973, appearing as the Count, Le nozze di Figaro (1960–1964), Verdi’s Macbeth (1965), and Don Alfonso, Così fan tutte (1972–1973) as well as giving numerous song recitals.
