Other Matter – Supernova Remnants. Label: Mahorka – mhrk101. Format: File, Album, MP3, 320 kbps. Together as Other Matter since 2011, they are wandering the dreary toxic spaces above, witnessing to the weakness of the human mind confronted with, and ultimately defeated by, the darkness, all darkness. A supernova remnant (SNR) is the structure resulting from the explosion of a star in a supernova. The supernova remnant is bounded by an expanding shock wave, and consists of ejected material expanding from the explosion, and the interstellar material it sweeps up and shocks along the way.
Other well-known supernova remnants include the Crab Nebula; Tycho, the remnant of SN 1572, named after Tycho Brahe who recorded the brightness of its original explosion; and Kepler, the remnant of SN 1604, named after Johannes Kepler. The youngest known remnant in our galaxy is G. +0 . HBH 3 (Spitzer space telescope; August 2, 2018). 3 (November 16, 2018). Origin of cosmic rays. Supernova remnants are considered the major source of galactic cosmic rays. Vitaly Ginzburg and Sergei Syrovatskii in 1964 remarked that if the efficiency of cosmic ray acceleration in supernova remnants is about 10 percent, the cosmic ray losses of the Milky Way are compensated.

Illustrations and other multimedia focusing on the Chandra mission, X-ray astronomy and Chandra peopleas well as a glossary of terms, acronym guide, frequently asked questions and other usful resources. Chandra has captured supernovas and the remnants they've left behind in spectacular X-ray images. Chandra's images help to determine the energy, composition and dynamics of these celestial explosions. See supernovas through Chandra's eyes.

Why are supernova remnants important to us? Supernova remnants greatly impact the ecology of the Milky Way. If it were not for SNRs, there would be no Earth, and hence, no plants or animals or people. This is because all the elements heavier than iron were made in a supernova explosion, so the only reason we find these elements on Earth or in our Solar System - or any other extrasolar planetary system - is because those elements were formed during a supernova. The gas that fills the disk of the Milky Way is called the interstellar medium (ISM). What else do SNRs do to the galaxy? In addition to enriching galaxies with heavy elements, supernova remnants release a great deal of energy to the ISM (1028 megatons per supernova). As the shockwave moves outward, it sweeps across a large volume of the ISM, impacting the ISM in two primary ways
Most of what we know about supernova remnants has been learned from a few examples that exploded recently and are relatively close, as we discuss below. In February, 1987, a star exploded as a supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small companion galaxy to the Milky Way. A supernova remnant (SNR) is the structure resulting from the explosion of a star in a supernova. The supernova remnant is bounded by an expanding shock wave, and consists of ejected material expanding from the explosion, and the interstellar material it sweeps up and shocks along the way.
There are two common routes to a supernova: either a massive star may run out of fuel, ceasing to generate fusion energy in its core, and collapsing inward under the force of its own gravity to form a neutron star or a black hole; or a white dwarf star may accumulate (accrete) material from a companion star until it reaches a critical mass and undergoes a thermonuclear explosion.
