The packaging features an eight-page booklet, with nine black-and-white photos from the production on the interior pages, and color front and back covers, the former featuring the key art of Daryl Hannah as Ayla from the original one-sheet poster, and the latter featuring two more photos from the production.

Among the myriad flaws of the much maligned Clan of the Cave Bear is its dreadful, ill-fitting score by Alan Silvestri. Equally problematic is Silvestri's atypically low-key, light approach. There's nothing here that captures the brutality and violence that we know defined the existence of early humankind

Composed in 1986, it is the earliest of Silvestri's great electronic works with which I am familiar, the others being FERNGULLY in 1992 and BEOWULF of last year. Its texture is light and magical and very similar to what Vangelis had created in 1981 for BLADE RUNNER. It's simple, direct and melodically satisfying, but takes its time and will reward a patient listener. Alan Silvestri's all-electronic score for The Clan of The Cave Bear comes from early in his career, when he was just becoming a major name in film music. The Clan of The Cave Bear followed the composer's classic Back To The Future (1985) by just one year. The film gave Silvestri a huge canvas. Extraordinary location photography and a script by John Sayles (Passion Fish, Eight Men Out) make this a truly stunning motion picture. Co-starring Pamela Reed (Junior, Kindergarten Cop) and Curtis Armstrong (Risky Business, Revenge of the Nerds). The score has been out of our catalog for over 20 years which means that, like with each of our other Varèse Encore releases, it really is, for all intents and purposes, a brand new release.
